Avatar Days

"Real vs. online identities. A portrait of four online gamers and how their daily lives contrast with their virtual ones."

Avatar Days is a documentary short produced by Ireland-based Piranha Bar in just 4 days, including all the VFX work. Filmed in the city of Dublin, the short deals with the elusive subject of identity. It shows how people who play World of Warcraft (a massively multiplayer online role-playing game) see their online identities, that is, the characters they chose to play with in the game.

Staged in an urban environment, the film replaces the interviewees with CG versions of their online characters. The combination of World of Warcraft language and discourse with real-world live action footage creates a very interesting contrast. The addition of CG characters to the sequence of shots from daily urban life adds to the surreal experience.

The film is no doubt a sign of the times, which makes the subject widely appealing.
