Free Time

"A young man contemplates a painting at a museum."

Free time is a short film created by four artists at French school Gobelins as an FX sequence exercise, on the subject of “The Tempest”. The short features one main character and focuses on sensory images and art. No conflict is present.

Staged in a museum, the short plays with sensory images, raising subjectivity in narration to bring the emotions and perceptions of a character into real life, through non-realistic staging.

The attention to aesthetics is worth noting, split screens and framing with varying sizes are used effectively to further play with the audience, unexpectedly changing the level of subjectivity in narration. Cameras are static, visual rhythm is handled through editing and motion within the frame, complemented by sound.
