The Gift

"A messenger carries a mysterious box for delivery."

Age: 13+

The Gift is a remarkable SciFi short film written and directed by Carl Rinsch about a man who delivers a mysterious present. It places special emphasis on an object, features subdued performances, an urban staging and quality VFX.

The film uses quick cutting, sparse dialogue and plays with a value placed on an object (along with sound design) to create suspense, finishing with an action sequence that features plenty of visual rhythm.

A lot of effort is dedicated to staging, aesthetics, composition and grading. The quality work done by DP Roman Vasyanov and art director Denis Lischenko are worth noting. Since the film is situated sometime in the future, this gave director Carl Rinsch ample space to play with VFX, and the VFX of The Gift don’t disappoint. They are top quality work, produced by Barcelona-based Big Lazy Robot (the authors of iDiots and Keloid). In fact, due to difficulties of filming the chase sequence, 90% of it was made with full CG.

It’s interesting to note that The Gift was made for Philips’ “Tell It Your Way” film contest, in which a number of directors created films based on the same dialogue, providing their own stories and staging.
