Bears On Stairs mixes stop-motion animation with 3D printing

London-based DBLG and Blue Zoo collaborated on the creation of a number of ID videos for TV channel Animal Planet using a low poly aesthetic. When the work was finished, the team wanted to bring home a physical souvenir from the project. After a number of experiments they decided to try to make an animated version of a bear using 3D printing. You can watch the results by clicking on the video above.

The sequence resembles pre-cinematograph inventions and optical toys that created an illusion of motion in early cinema history. It seems to announce that 3D printing is getting ready to play an active role in the future history of filmmaking, and that its output has no intention of standing still as mere props.
