97%

"Via an app on his phone, Bert discovers that a 97% love match is near."

97% is a short film directed by Ben Brand that deals with technology and how it’s affecting dating. Using a comedic approach, the short aims to criticize the contemporary use of social media and apps in everyday life, and how they can unintentionally sabotage us.

Staged in a subway train (urban area), 97% makes no use of dialogue. Frequent close-ups capture and transmit the actor’s facial expressions, mixed with a number of POV shots showing the app at work. The story is told from the point of view of the main character, Bert, whose actions are triggered by the display of the app. This app helps create and build conflict, and introduces video game elements to the story.

Highlights of 97% include its use of humor, the way the display of the app creates a context through which the character interprets what he sees – misleading the audience a number of times, the use of editing and jump cuts during the character’s moments of distress, the way the app creates conflict which is transmitted and amplified through Bert’s facial expressions, and the notable sequence in which Bert and the girl sitting in front of him look at each other on the reflection of the window.
