"Two soldiers face each other on the battlefield."
Charge is a short film directed by Belgian artist Gerrit Bekers that turns war into an airborne choreography. Two characters with a clearly defined external conflict are presented, with battlefield staging under stormy weather.
Charge features great, stylized character design, with a black and white aesthetic. It makes abundant use of directions to build space, and has a marked change in visual rhythm pacing. The expressiveness of the animation is especially efficient for transmitting the changes in characters’ attitudes. The quality of CG technique is also worth noting, as well as the creativity, humor, conscious play with expectations and film codes/genres, supernatural elements and choice of leaving things unexplained.
