"Antoine Betrand leaves his girlfriend to enroll in the army. But his days in battle won't last long."
In The Head is a short film that deals with the subject of destiny and features various interesting narrative devices, changes in POV, jumps in time and explicit use of elements related to filmmaking (a camera, projector’s sound, film strip, etc.). It was produced by students from the Ecole Supérieure des Métiers Artistiques in Montpellier (France).
A character initially presents the story with photos and non-diegetic voice over narration. The last photo turns into a video that launches the film, which jumps back in time and starts before the photos were taken.
After the main character reaches Heaven he is presented with a broken camera problem, sending him back in time multiple times. The recurring experience is edited increasingly fast and ends up being shown in a sped up sequence. At the end of the film, the narrative point of view becomes once again the one from the character who is relating the story from outside the story space, projecting the film for the audience.
The Mise-en-scène is quite playful, and includes a great non-diegetic shot of two aspirins being dropped in a glass of water, which replaces a shot of an explosion.
