Kokeshi

"A documentary on the making of a Japanese kokeshi."

 Note

This film will be enjoyed mostly by filmmakers and cinephiles. It may not be appealing to a general audience.

Coming from Japan, this documentary shows the creation process of a Japanese doll (kokeshi, Naruko style), by a proficient craftsman. No conflicts are present, the film is mostly descriptive and uses close-up shots predominantly, with shallow depth of field, and makes especially good use of sensory images.

The emphasis on close-ups helps provide visual rhythm to the piece as most motion within the frame is amplified. There’s also good attention to composition and aesthetics, but the notable proficiency of the artist and the use of sensory images is what sets it apart and makes it thoroughly enjoyable.
