Krapooyo

"A young fruit discovers life."

Age: 13+

An independent project by French artist Yannick Puig, Krapooyo is a short film that features a coming of age story with an emphasis on exploration, discovery and surprise. It presents one main character and no major conflicts.

Good effort has been dedicated to the aesthetic of the short, including character design and the use of a stylized aesthetic that combines 3D and 2D animation, and tones down the realism of the 3D medium with painterly textures.

Staged in a small alien planet with one distinguishable tree and a population of small alien bugs, the short focuses on the development of the main character and the changes/metamorphoses his body and motivations go through, presenting some codes from video games (platform jumping, sound and graphic elements when a new body part shows up, etc.). There’s some good use of off-screen space for increasing the elements of surprise.

Krapooyo took 3 years to complete, with the artist working on his free time while being employed at a video games company.
