"In the middle of the forest special magic takes place."
Lüum is a short film by Pierre Valdivielso about four chameleons who eat fireflies in the forest and the fun consequences of their hunting. The short is quite ambitious for a solo effort and was produced by the artist during his studies at French school Émile Cohl.
Four main characters, external and internal conflicts, chase sequences and an accent on lighting and comedy are the main components of the short.
Staged in a forest, Lüum uses a stylized, hand-drawn aesthetic, with a palette of dark greys combined with saturated colors. Good work has been dedicated to character design, their expressiveness adds a lot to the comedic elements of the film. Plenty of effort has been dedicated to the environments, too.
Lüum handles plot points particularly well. Visual rhythm is high and plenty of surprises are introduced through camera moves. Fast pans, tilts, zooms and cranes abound. Sounds design and music are worth noting, they help add rhythm to the film and enhance the comedic aspect of the characters.
What makes Lüum work so well? Original script, fun characters, plenty of surprises and abundant comedy.
