"The simple pleasure of putting one foot in front of the other."
The Walk is a short film by Art&Graft studio that brings a call from nature. In an age characterized by sedentary human behavior, disconnection from the environment and omnipresent screens and mobile devices, this wonderfully anachronistic film by London-based Art&Graft focuses on what should be a rather common subject: walking. And most specifically, walking around nature. The context, however, makes it a completely unusual one.
One character, no explicit conflict. Staged in a rural environment, the film makes a strong appeal to the senses with heavy use of sound, plenty of sensory images and depiction of atmosphere, open spaces and elements from nature. Interestingly enough, the heavily stylized aesthetic does not deter at all from successfully transmitting all this to the audience.
Although The Walk does not present a traditional narrative it does create a progression (which leads to a “revelation” at the end). According to the authors, the idea for the short was inspired by England’s Lake District.
What draws the attention strongly, is that the depiction of a walk around nature can become something almost revolutionary and cause such strong reactions from the audience.
