This Side Up

"A naive music-lover's patience is tested on his quest to download music online, as his perspective on technology completely changes."

This Side Up is Liron Topaz’ graduation project film at the Florida-based Ringling College of Art and Design. The short features one main character, an external conflict and an accent on comedy.

Liron has a lot of practice in drawing stylized characters and it shows through in the short. Good effort has been dedicated to aesthetic work. Both in character as well as environment design. The main character of the film is Oshan, in the author’s words, Liron’s “long lost cousin”. Oshan lives somewhere in the Middle East in his village, and dreams to someday get online.

Liron also dedicated a lot of work to the interior environment, he wanted to create a home for the character, and not just a set for a movie. “Probably most of the detail will be lost in the movie, but I owe it to my character.”

Comedy is achieved through the main character’s interaction with technology, which continuously creates conflict and frustrates him, but pushes him to look for creative solutions. It’s interesting to note that due to the universal appeal of the film, the location of the environment is something that is not questioned by viewers. Most of us have seen such characters or had related experiences ourselves. The event portrayed could be taking place anywhere.
