Under The Fold

"Frank struggles to find a job in streets filled with unemployed workers. Along the way he is accompanied by his son’s imagination and joy."

The production system implemented at Danish school The Animation Workshop, which uses teams of 7+ artists, pays off once again in the quality and great amount of detail that shows up in this short film.

Under The Fold employs a multitude of characters with only 3 of them (main ones) being recognizable. The father character is the one the presents a strong conflict, which is amplified by the second main character, his son, and the responsibility he entails.

The situation is narrated through two POVs, the one from the father and the one from the son. The later is portrayed with an increased level of subjectivity (a.k.a. psychological or mental subjectivity). The fantasy world of the child interacts with the real world and is personified in a character and later expressed through a change in the environment and its aesthetic.

It’s the interaction between the POV of the father and that of the son that drives the narrative forward and helps modify both characters and their attitudes.

The film makes great use of sound (notice the music combination with moving cameras as well as for introducing the fantasy world), impressive image composition and aesthetics, ambitious staging (wide spaces are portrayed), great character design with expressive rendering of characters’ emotions and more.
