Auto-follow filming drones: AirDog and HEXO+

Great news for filmmakers. In the next logical step after the surge of remote-controlled drones for filmmaking, two new unmanned aerial vehicle projects have surfaced recently that are designed to track, follow and film subjects autonomously at heights and angles set by the user. The new devices will allow independent filmmakers to produce great aerial camera shots and all kinds of staging with long takes and moving cameras. A software for mobile devices allows to further control and modify the behavior of the UAVs.

The developers of HEXO+ are even working on a more advanced Director’s Toolkit software that allows to create a sequence of camera movements (crane, dolly, pan, revolve, etc.), combine them with appropriate framing and have the UAV perform the sequence upon request.

Both projects have exceeded their funding goals on Kickstarter. Visit the AirDog and HEXO+ Kickstarter pages for more.
