Interview

"A young man is being interviewed for the most important job of all time, and he doesn’t even know what the job is about."

Interview is a short film comedy about a man who goes through an unusual job interview.

Sparse staging, few characters and an emphasis on absurd dialogue compose this short produced by 10 students at Denmark-based The Animation Workshop. While the cinematography work makes good use of close-ups and other devices to maximize characters’ expressiveness (or lack of it), the use of minimalist staging, importance given to objects, use of blocking, lighting and abundant dialogue introduce codes from theater plays.

The film makes interesting use of sound and perceptions of the senses, most especially in the “blindfold” sequence (1m54-2m30). Humor plays a key role, influences from absurd humor abound, turning the interview into an impossible exchange that drives the candidate character into confusion. Discontinuities in staging also help augment the sense of disorientation.

An element of playfulness is also present in the film, which necessarily reflects to a degree the way the authors of the film have approached its production process.
