"Explorers arrive after a long voyage and are met by celebrations welcoming their return. Meanwhile, someone has the strange feeling of being completely isolated in its own native city."
Note
This short does not have a traditionally unfolding narrative.
French illustrator and director Carlos De Carvalho returns with another animated film, once again featuring impressive aesthetic work. The heavy stylization of the piece and the way it plays with color, perspective and the portrayal of fragmented spaces is a sight to behold.
On the narrative side, the short is edited following the music soundtrack, in the style of music videos. Even though there is a progression along the piece, the editing rhythm is (most of the time) not dictated by the characters or their dramatic development, and thus conveys a rhythmic visual description of the main character’s feelings and internal conflict, alternating with contrasting situations of celebration and joy.
The short uses one recognizable character and a crowd of anonymous ones, which are employed to help build the feeling of isolation of the main character. The ending provides an uplifting note.
