"One night in the deep country, an insect feels alone."
One main character, a rural/suburban staging and a focus on aesthetics and animation compose this great short made by Alexandre Veaux at Supinfocom Valenciennes.
The author mentions that the short is a “visual experimentation about bringing dynamism to the CGI medium”, and this clearly shows through in the film. A lot of effort has been dedicated to creating the geometric stylized aesthetic and refreshing non-realistic elements of the short. The insect character is notably expressive, both through facial and body gestures.
The short has a high visual rhythm, achieved through movement and animation of the character, editing, use of close-ups, changes in lighting, camera movements and complementary sound. It’s worth mentioning the great animated effect of the insect when it’s electrocuted (see the making of on the author’s site), as well as the impression transmitted through sound, change to a wider shot and camera movement.
A number of sensory images help enrich the short, including the car passing by in the middle of nowhere, the beat and pulsating light in the house, and the electricity in the loose cables.
The humor element, party theme and insects attracted by light (subjects most viewers can relate to) also add to the appeal of the short.
