Thought Of You

"An animation about human relationships, expressed through choreography."

Dance, choreography and animation are combined in Thought Of You, a wonderful short film by US animator Ryan Woodward and choreographer Kori Wakamatsu that deals with human relationships and is narrated with a high level of subjectivity.

Minimalist, non-realistic staging allows the director to playfully describe human relationships and their idealization. Two characters are employed and there is abundant use of metamorphosis throughout the short. An emphasis is placed on gestures and body language to transmit conflict and emotions, since the director decided to avoid using facial expressions. A black & white aesthetic is utilized for the characters, background color is used expressively to help transmit emotions (and to transition between times of day).

No cuts, and just a few subtle camera moves are used. Visual rhythm is implemented mostly through motion within the frame, with remarkably fluid animation.

The director’s motivation for creating the short was to further experiment with the animation medium. The final result reflects this, and it also offers a self-contained narrative with a clearly defined progression. The director also intended the audience to think about their own relationships while watching the film, to transmit a sense of introspection. It certainly achieves this, and the widely-appealing subject the author chose has allowed the film to reach a broad audience.
