Crooks

"Doctors and death arrive to the scene of an ailing character."

Crooks is a short film written and directed by French artist Amélie Graffet about a number of doctors who are tempted by death. The short was made during her studies at Supinfocom Arles.

Set in a snowy urban environment the short uses a stylized, minimalist aesthetic with a mostly de-saturated palette complemented by a few saturated colors. Crooks features eight characters, a music-driven performance and bleak humor.

Highlights include the way sound is used to express characters and describe off-screen action, good use of overhead shots, plenty of over-the-shoulder shots or framing with objects in the foreground to establish spatial relationships, and use of music to set the mood of the scene as well as to trigger sequences.

Also interesting are the ambulance doors used as transition and reframing element (0m32), the frontal and rear shots that help create visual rhythm, the value placed on objects and of course the acid humor of the Faustian deal.
