Operator

"An operator takes an emergency call. Based on a real-life story."

Operator is a gripping short film by British actress and director Caroline Bartleet about an operator who takes a fire emergency service phone call. The film places special emphasis on offscreen space, presents a conflict with the environment and an accent on performance and sound design.

Using a few camera positions inside a room and focused mostly on the operator’s face, this film represents a worthy filmmaking exception, as it manages to successfully build strong conflict and tension through the use of sound, abundant text, performance and the recreation of a situation in offscreen space. In this sense it bears influences from theater (though the emphasis on close-ups makes it far more immersive).

The great performances are key to building conflict, making the exchange of energy between the characters perfectly believable. One can sense that the operator character is listening and reacting to what the mother says. The emotional displacement and internal situations she transitions through are convincing, too. Sound design helps complete the architecture of the offscreen space in which the action is taking place.

Visual rhythm is provided through editing and motion within the frame, with most of the pace dictated by sound. Conflict is also built through it, together with the expressions of the operator character.
