"Yvan, an astronaut on a solo drilling expedition, lands his spaceship on a new planet."
Coming from French school La Poudrière, this short by Titouan Bordeau mixes SciFi staging and iconography with an unusual cast of characters.
The short uses a stylized aesthetic with a limited number of colors and a non-realistic color palette (for viewer’s expectations) along with retro sounds. It presents an unexpected encounter together with an external conflict that turns into a conflict with the environment. Visual rhythm is handled mostly through editing and motion within the frame.
Highlights include the use of sensory images in the sequence after the machine starts malfunctioning, the creative elements of surprise in the plot and the wonderful subdued humor that permeates the whole short (the dance of the ducks and the final “metamorphosis” of the man character, among others, are especially funny).
It’s worth noting that the animation was done by Lucrèce Andreae, author of the great short The Words Of The Carp (also produced at La Poudrière).
