The Incredible Marrec

"Marrec tells the story of his most epic fish catch."

Coming from ESMA Montpellier, this short presents a narration within a narration that is playfully portrayed as an unreliable flashback. Told from a fisherman’s POV, the narrative is driven through a voice-over that guides the images, causing humorous situations through contrast and exaggeration.

Packed with action sequences, the short offers lots of visual rhythm through camera movements and editing, complemented by accompanying music. The graphic transitions between the flashback narrative and present time are usually done through cuts, but there’s one that deserves special mention: the last one (at 4m41) features a nice camera pull back combined with a fade and graphic match.

The underwater nature of the conflicts portrayed, non-realistic narrative, attention to aesthetics and environment design, storytelling format and humorous staging make for a very entertaining short.
