"A toy train story."
Round Trip is a short film by CG artist and music composer David Gruwier about boundaries and imagination. It was created as part of his studies at 3D College Denmark.
I could be bounded in a nutshell and count myself a king of infinite space.
Two characters, a household staging and a narrative with shifting levels of subjectivity are the main ingredients of this creative short.
Using a realistic aesthetic the director slowly transforms the staging from realistic to non-realistic and back, varying the levels of subjectivity in narration and paying careful attention to continuity. Highlights of Round Trip include its great use of off-screen space, lighting, aesthetics, great CG technique, catchy music (composed by the author himself), creativity in introducing and portraying the dream sequence of a toy train, and effective use of surprise.
It’s worth noting how the author has taken the restrictions that are a necessary part of personal school projects, making the most out of them and creating a great short that shines thanks to its minimalist use of narrative elements.
