Hugh

"Ages ago, humans went through many hardships because the sky was too low. A story adapted from an old Apache legend."

Hugh is a short film created by four students at French school ESMA Montpellier that features an adaptation of an Apache legend to the film medium. Hugh uses voice over narration and an aesthetic that mixes 2D and 3D animation to portray a story filled with an iconography related to nature.

The static staging inside a tent (in the 3D sequences) poses a challenge regarding possible lack of visual rhythm, which is resolved through editing (jumping to reaction shots, or to the 2D aesthetic), or through close-ups that help provide more movement within the frame due to the actions of the characters themselves.

The 2D and 3D aesthetics and the way the film alternates between them offers some interesting opportunities for playing with how they transition to each other. The magical elements of the film also help bring spice to its storytelling atmosphere.
